2019 Club Championship

Our 2019 Club Championship was held on Saturday, August 10th and Sunday, August 11th. Overall the weather was good for the weekend but on Saturday, even though it was warm and sunny, the wind was strong and swirling, making playing conditions quite challenging for the players.

The Ladies’ Club Championship was a close battle all weekend between Mary Jo Wertwyn and Julie Bonsor, as the two of them separated themselves from the rest of the division. On Saturday, Mary Jo Wertwyn shot 83 for a slim one-stroke lead over Julie Bonsor. On Sunday, Mary Jo got off to a good start and stretched her lead to four shots after three holes, but she got into trouble on the 7th hole and suddenly the ladies were tied. It remained close throughout the back 9 and Mary Jo had 2 putts for the win on the 18th hole. Unfortunately for her, she three-putted and the event went to a playoff. Julie Bonsor won her first Ladies Club Championship on the second playoff hole.

In the Ladies B Flight, Kim Vandewouw played a terrific round on Sunday to win by 7 strokes over Emma White. In addition to finishing second in the Ladies B Flight, Emma White is our 2019 Junior Girls’ Club Champion. In the Ladies C flight, Lesley Murray had the lead after the first round and followed it up with a great round on Sunday to win by 6 shots.

In the Men’s Championship, Tim Lemoyre Jr. won his second Club Championship title after shooting an impressive 68 in the tough conditions on Saturday for a 6 shot lead. On Sunday, Jonah O’Connor gave him a little scare at the start after starting birdie-birdie and narrowing the lead, but Tim stayed steady all day and his 73 gave him a comfortable victory.

In the Men’s B Division, Chris Bradley was the most consistent as he shot 81 both days which was good enough for a two shot win over Jamey Larone. Clem Simard played some very impressive golf shooting rounds of 82-81 to dominate the field in the C Division and win by 12 strokes.  Our 2019 Men’s Senior Champion is Rob Warren, who shot 71 for the best round of the day on Sunday. In the Super Senior Division, Ken Graham won by 4 strokes over Michel Gaudet. There was no Junior Boy’s Champion this year as no boys were able to participate. Carter Jarrett, our top junior boy, had a conflict with the Ontario Bantam Championship. Carter had a great tournament at Deer Creek where he finished in third place in the 15 and under provincial championship.

Mixed 2-Ball Championship & MY FM Mixed Team Qualifying

On Sunday, June 24th, we held our Mixed 2-Ball Championship. This event is two-person team event where the format played is called the Chapman format. In this format, both players tee off, then play each other’s ball and then finish the hole playing alternate from the best 2nd shot. It is an interesting format and takes good team play from both players to shoot low scores.

The top of the leaderboard was crowded with two teams shooting 77 and another finishing with a 78. Congratulations to Mary-Ann Abrams and Jim Abrams who narrowly beat Michelle Lauzon and Ryan Boudreau through retrogression. Finishing one shot behind was the team of Faye Warren and Rob Warren. 2018 Links of Friendship Scoreboard

The 2019 Club Championship was held on Saturday, August 10th & 11th. The 84 Members who participated were treated to fairly good weather for the event. It was sunny and warm on both days but the wind on Saturday did make for interesting scoring conditions.

In the Men’s Championship, Tim Lemoyre Jr. won his second championship as he started off with an excellent round of 68, 3-under par, in tough conditions on Saturday to take a commanding 6 stroke lead going into Sunday. In the final round, Jonah O’Connor gave Tim a bit of scare by starting birdie-birdie but Tim held onto at least a 3 shot lead all day and shot 73 to finish at 141, 1-under par for the Championship.

The Ladies’ Championship was much more exciting as Mary Jo Wertwyn and Julie Bonsor worked their way ahead of the field and battled each other head-to-head in the final round on Sunday. Mary Jo Wertwyn started Sunday with a slim one stroke lead over Julie but a quick start extended her lead to four shots after 3 holes. Julie played steady golf on the front 9 though and when Mary Jo had go into trouble on the 7th hole, the ladies were tied. From there on the lead never got larger than one stroke for either lady. Mary Jo held a one stroke lead going to the 18th tee and she had a chance to putt for the win, but three putted at an unfortunate time to send the competition to a sudden-death playoff. In the playoff, the ladies tied on the 10th hole but Julie Bonsor won the title on the 18th hole to win her first Ladies’ Club Championship.

In the Men’s B Division, Chris Bradley shot 81-81 for a two stroke victory over Jamie Larone. Clem Simard ran away from the field in the Men’s C Division with two of his best rounds 82-81, to win by twelve over second place finisher John Rook. Rob Warren had a tough first round 78 but shot a 71 on Sunday, the best round of the day, to win the Men’s Senior Championship. In the Men’s Super Senior, Ken Graham played two excellent rounds of golf for a big victory over Dave Cummings.

There was no junior boys competition this season has Carter Jarrett could not play this year as he was participating in the Ontario Bantam Boys competition. Carter played excellent golf down at Deer Creek in Ajax. He was tied for the lead after the first day and finished in 3rd place overall.

In the other Ladies Divisions, Kim Vandewouw continued to turn around her season with strong play over the weekend to win the Ladies’ B Divison by seven strokes over Emma White. Emma White played excellent all weekend and in addition to her second place finish in the Ladies’ B, she is also our 2019 Girls’ Club Champion. In the Ladies’ C Division, Lesley Murray played well on Saturday for a one stroke lead and then had an excellent round on Sunday to win the title by six shots over Leona Kenny. Although disappointed with a loss in the playoff for the Ladies Championship, Mary Jo Wertwyn did not go home empty handed as she is our 2019 Ladies’ Senior Champion.

The 2018 Quattrocchi Cup was held here at the Renfrew Golf Club on Sunday, August 26th. RGC welcomed 12-man teams from Deep River, Island Brae, Mississippi, Pembroke and Sand Point for the event. This year saw a new 2-Man team format introduced for the competition. The new format where the best 5 of 6 2-Man scramble scores counted for each Club’s team score was widely liked by the players.

The competition was excellent as the winning team was not known until the final two scores were entered. As players waited for the final groups to finish, many of the players also enjoyed watching Brooke Henderson become the first Canadian Pro to win the CP Ladies Open in 45 years.

When the final scores were posted, the team from Deep River was the only team under par with a team score of -1. Our team from RGC finished in second place, losing by just a single stroke. Representing RGC and listed by team were Brian Hewitt & Bill James, Jamey Larone & Hessel Vandervelde, Tim Lemoyre & Peter Barnes, Rick Desilets & Chris Graham, Dave Hall & Fergus Wrinn and Bud Lance & Keith Brydges.

2018 Quattrocchi Cup Results

This past weekend 12 ladies represented RGC at the 80th O’Brien Cup held at the Mississippi Golf Club on Saturday, August 25th. Our ladies finished in 4th place as the ladies from Mississippi won the event on their home course.

The photo to the right shows our team as well as the caddies who supported our ladies. Thank to the ladies on the team for representing the Club:

Front row(left to right): Faye Warren, Kim Vandewouw, Mary Ann Abrams, Anne Windle, Anne MacNeil, and Mary Peer. Back row (left to right): Julie Bonsor, Vi Rossy, Michelle Lauzon, Colleen Sheehan, Mary Jo Wertwyn and Barb Desilets.

What a fantastic weekend we had for our 89th Club Championship, presented by our friends at Ottawa Valley Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine! We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend weather wise as our Members were treated to the best golf weekend of the season.

The weekend started on Friday with the Junior Club Championship and our annual 18-hole par 3 event in the late afternoon. Congratulations to Emma White for becoming our 2018 Jr. Girls Club Champion and Carter Jarrett, who is our 2018 Jr. Boys Club Champion. In the Par 3 Contest, Bill James narrowly beat Mary Ann Abrams by 0.3 strokes. Thirty-five Members played the course where the tees were set up to make each hole play as a par 3. The competition used net scoring where 50% of each player’s handicap factor was subtracted from their gross score.

On Saturday, many members took advantage of the great conditions for scoring 22 players shot net under par scores which included a couple personal best scores and two net 63’s by Jim Senack and Andrew Rowat. On Saturday, R&D Insurance sponsored a hole-in-one contest on the 14th hole where Members had a chance to win $10,000. Unfortunately, no-one is $10,000 richer but we thank R&D Insurance for their support.

On Sunday, the conditions were just as nice for scoring as once again it was hot, sunny and just a slight breeze. The final round pressure may have affected scores though as there were not as many birdies nor as low as scores on Sunday. We thank the 78 Members who participated in Club Championship for a great weekend of competition.

Congratulations to Rob Warren, our 2018 Men’s Club Champion. Rob won his 12th Men’s Club Championship on Sunday after shooting rounds of 70-74. After making a good charge with a 1 under front on Sunday, Joshua Barnes faded on the back 9 to finish in second place at 154. Rounding out the podium was Jamie Aldrich, who came in with a two day total of 156.

Congratulations to our Ladies’ Champion Mary Jo Wertwyn, who captured her 4th consecutive Ladies Club Championship (and fifth overall). Mary Jo’s two-day total was 166. Mary Ann Abrams was a close second at 169 and also is our 2018  Senior Ladies Champion. Barb Desilets won low net with a total net score of 137.

Dave Hall won the B flight Championship for the second year in a row firing back-to-back 79’s for a two day score of 158. He came from behind to defeat day one leader Andrew Rowat, who shot a personal best 77 on Saturday.  Andrew placed 3rd in B flight while Charlie Strader sneaked into second place with firing 81-80.

Colleen Sheehan won Ladies B Flight by shooting back to back 98 scores. Lois Butson was second and had a total of 209 and we had a tie for third place with Marion Graham and Linda Kidd with a two day total of 211.

Don Carty held onto his overnight lead and successfully won the C flight title with rounds of 83-91. Second place was Robert Carroll who shot a two day total of 177. Lawrence Gallagher came third with firing a two day total of 180.

in Ladies C flight the Mau sisters Battled it out. Faith ended out coming on top and winning the C flight Championship.

Bill Butson also defended his Super Senior title, coming back on day one leader Dave Cummings. Bill shot 82-81 while second and third were Don Eady and Michel Gaudet.
